With qualification complete, the World Snooker Championships begin for real on Saturday when defending champion John Higgins takes on Liang Wenbo. The 25-year-old from China is rated in the world top 40 and could prove a tricky first round rival for Higgins who has played relatively little snooker since winning the world title at the Crucible last year.
Ronnie O’Sullivan still remains one of snooker’s biggest attractions and he makes his bow against Peter Ebdon on Monday afternoon. The Rocket has hit form since the turn of the year, winning the German Masters in February and performing well at the Welsh Open and China Open recently.
Ebdon won the World Snooker Championship in 2002 and proved he still has the ability to win major ranking events by taking the China Open in a final frame decider against Stephen Maguire in March. The Welshman’s cautious play may well frustrate O’Sullivan who prefers to play his snooker at a much quicker tempo than Ebdon.
Ladbrokes has odds for every first round match with 22 markets available on every head-to-head encounter. Sign up with Ladbrokes and receive up to £50 free bet on the World Snooker Championships.
