England take no chances with Bresnan

England are taking no chances with the fitness of Tim Bresnan who has had a precautionary scan on his calf ahead of the ICC World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

The Yorkshire seam bowler had been feeling some discomfort in his right leg and medical staff decided to send the player for an MRI scan on Wednesday. The team are not expecting bad news and the results will be known some time on Thursday. Bresnan was forced to return home from England’s one-day series against Australia earlier this year when he injured the same calf and the back-up team want to be certain that Bresnan will be fit to play a full part in the do-or-die game this weekend.

England have already sent home seam duo Stuart Broad and Ajmal Shahzad due to injuries and it is hoped Bresnan can play a major role in the depleted seam attack. He is England’s leading seam bowler with nine wickets in six matches so far and along with spinner Graeme Swan, has stood out for England who have been fortunate to scrape through to the knock out stages. James Anderson is waiting to hear if he will take part, the right-arm paceman has struggled to find his form on the sub-continent and was dropped after failing to pick up a wicket in the defeat against Bangladesh on 11 March.

The news comes at the same time it was announced that all-rounder Michael Yardy was flown home earlier than expected. The 30-year-old has been suffering from depression for what the England and Wales Cricket Board referred to as: “a prolonged period of time” and after consultations between the player and the medical team it was decided that the best option was for the Sussex captain to return home.

England have already drafted in Eoin Morgan, Chris Tremlett and Jade Dernbach to replace injured personnel and have applied to the ICC Technical Committee for permission to call up a fourth replacement who is yet un-named.
