Pulis left fuming as Stoke drop two points

Tony Pulis was left fuming at the assistant referee's decision to allow Carlos Vela’s late equaliser that cost Stoke two points in the Premier League clash with West Brom at the Britannia Stadium on Monday night.

Vela appeared to be marginally offside as he retreated from the Stoke line when Steven Reid turned and delivered a cross to put the former Arsenal striker in on goal. Just as he did against Wolves last time, West Brom’s new hit man put his chance away to earn his team a valuable late point.

The goal left the Stoke boss raging after the game as he questioned the assistant’s credentials to be making rulings at the top level. "It is offside. It is a very poor decision by the linesman," Pulis said. "If he can't get that right, what is he doing officiating at our level? When he's looking down the line that close, he has got to get them right."  Pulis conceded that it wasn’t just the line official who had an off-day: "We did not play well. That is as poor as we have played all season," he said. "But looking at their goal, it's a shocking decision. We'll just get on with it. Our players made bad decisions, too," he added.

Stoke played second fiddle most of the night and had Vela been a little sharper with two injury-time opportunities, West Brom could have taken the three points their overall play deserved. Rory Delap put Stoke in front on 53 minutes when he headed home Jermaine Pennant’s corner kick. Pennant was Stoke’s most dangerous player and had gone close twice in the goalless first half. Asmir Begovic proved to be the busiest keeper in the Potter’s goal and made four crucial stops in the dying minutes including a dramatic double save when parrying a Graham Dorrans pile driver before smothering Vela’s attempt from the rebound.

Stoke moved into tenth position following the result while the point took West Brom out of the relegation places to seventeenth.
