Australia extend unbeaten ICC World Cup record

ICC World Cup holders Australia extended its unbeaten tournament record when cruising to a seven-wicket win against New Zealand in Nagpur on Friday.

Australia last tasted World Cup defeat in the 1996 final against Sri Lanka and the record was never in danger as the Black Caps failed to handle Aussie pacemen Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait. The strike duo tore threw the top order reducing New Zealand to 73 for 6 before eventually being bowled out for 206 runs in 45.1 overs with Johnson picking up 4 wickets for 33 in 9.1 overs and Tait taking 3 for 35 from his seven overs.

Johnson was claiming his second four-wicket haul after his destruction of Zimbabwe in Australia’s opening 2011 ICC World Cup game on Monday when he returned figures of 4 for 19 in the 91 run victory. On Friday, Johnson took the wickets of Black Caps number 3, Jesse Ryder for 25 and James Franklin for a duck in his first spell. He returned to end the resistance of Nathan McCullum who made 52 before wrapping up the innings when skipper Ricky Ponting held a catch from Tim Southee.

The 207 run target proved no problem for the Australian batsmen after openers Shane Watson and Brad Haddin both made half-centuries in an opening stand of 133. Watson scored at a run a ball to make 62 while Haddin was slightly more aggressive in making 55 from 50 balls and Australia raced to their target in 34 overs.
