Gareth Bale rules himself out of Milan trip

Harry Redknapp has accepted that Gareth Bale will not feature in Tottenham’s UEFA Champions League clash with AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday night.

On Sunday morning, the Spurs’ boss had refused to rule out his flying winger who sent European football pundits into a frenzy after his scintillating second half hat trick against Inter in Milan during the group stages. The Wales international missed Saturday’s 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light on Saturday but Redknapp and the club doctors felt he could be fit to face AC Milan.

Redknapp told Sky Sports News: "The specialists don't see too much of a problem there. There's nothing that should keep him out too long. They looked at Crouch's back and he has an epidural and Gareth had similar problems. Crouch's looked an awful lot worse.”

But, it appears Redknapp has left the final decision with Bale who didn’t enjoy his work out in the North East on Sunday where he had traveled with the team for the weekend.

Redknapp continued: "Gareth's has taken a little bit longer to heal. We've got to make sure he's right. He's a young lad and he's very important. He's got a great future in front of him. He doesn't feel he's ready to play. We leave it to him. At Sunderland he worked with the fitness coaches on Sunday morning and when they started to push him a bit he couldn't go on. We've got to take our time and make sure he's right when he comes back."

The news comes as a blow for Spurs who could be without a number of first choice players for the crucial first leg tie. With Bale definitely missing, Jermain Jenas will also sit out the game due to suspension, Peter Crouch is struggling with his back problem and Luka Modric remains doubtful as he recovers from an appendix operation.

But, Rafael van der Vaart should be fit to return and Nico Kranjar’s return to midfield has gone well having scored the deciding goal in the last two games of Tottenham’s 3-game winning streak.
