Mike Hussey to miss the ICC World Cup

Australia’s top one day batsman Michael Hussey has been officially ruled out of the ICC World Cup that begins on 19 February and Cricket Australia have been given permission to change the injury-hit 15-man squad.

The Australian ODI squad suffered injuries to key players during the 6-1 win in the Commonwealth Bank ODI series and after assessments on Hussey, Nathan Hauritz, Ricky Ponting, Steve Smith and Brad Haddin an application was made to the ICC technical committee to replace Hussey and Hauritz who will both require surgery on their injuries.

Australia have been given the all-clear to replace Hussey, who has ruptured his hamstring, with South Australia’s Callum Ferguson and Tasmanian spinner Jason Kresja can come in for Hauritz, who has a dislocated shoulder.

The Aussie’s remain the ICC’s top ranked ODI side and bookmakers are generally betting 11/2 for the reigning World champions to retain their title and win the ICC World Cup for a fourth consecutive time on the Indian subcontinent.

Hussey has a one-day average of 52 having played 150 ODIs and is ranked fourth in the ICC one-day batting rankings and leaves some big shoes for Ferguson to fill if selected for the first match against Zimbabwe on 21 February.

26-year-old Ferguson has represented his country 28 times in ODIs and featured in the final two matches of the one-day series against the English tourists, scoring 46 in 6th ODI at Sydney Cricket Ground and 15 in the final game in Perth.

Jason Krejza will be familiar with conditions on the subcontinent as he was part of Australia’s Test Team that toured India in 2008 and chairman of the National Selection Panel, Andrew Hilditch said: “We’re certain he (Krejza) will be a key member of our squad.”

The 28 year-old has been away from the international scene for the last two seasons and made his ODI debut in the Perth on Sunday where he took two wickets for 53 runs. Spin bowlers will feature prominently in the Top Bowler betting markets at the ICC World Cup and online bookmaker Stan James has installed Krejza at odds of 50/1 to be the tournaments Top Bowler.
