Luis Suarez finds scoring touch on Liverpool debut

Luis Suarez got his Liverpool career off to a flying start when scoring on his debut in the Premier League clash with Stoke City on Wednesday night. Another new boy, Andy Carroll is still carrying a thigh strain and his Liverpool debut will be delayed for another two or three weeks while he regains full fitness.

Liverpool’s new January signings were introduced to the Anfield faithful before the game, former Newcastle United target man Carroll was paraded to rapturous applause prior to taking a seat in the stands while Suarez took a place on the bench for the start of the game.

Following a goalless first period, Raul Meireles was able to break the deadlock two minutes into the second half when scoring from close range after the Stoke defence failed to clear Steven Gerrard’s free kick. Suarez was called into action with half an hour to go and when Dirk Kuyt played him through on 79 minutes, the Uruguayan rounded Asmir Begovic to stroke the ball goalwards, Stoke’s Andy Wilkinson could only help the ball on its way with his sliced attempt to clear.

The 2-0 win takes Liverpool to within 2 points of sixth placed Sunderland following their third consecutive league win. With Kenny Dalglish inspiring a revival in the red half of Merseyside, bookmakers have cut Liverpool’s odds to win a European spot next season. A top six finish will guarantee another Europa League campaign and rescue what was becoming a disastrous season for the Reds under previous management. Online bookmaker Totesport is offering odds of 10/11 for Liverpool to finish top six after midweek results have seen them become an odds-on chance with all the oddsmakers.

The January deals that took Fernando Torres to Chelsea and allowed the signings of Carroll and Suarez has enthused Anfield and hopes of sneaking into a Champions League qualifying spot have been resurrected by Dalglish’s presence at the helm and the promise of greater firepower from the incoming strike duo. Odds for Liverpool to snatch a top four spot have shrunk to single figures in places but Irish bookmaker Paddy Power is offering odds of 12/1 for the Reds to finish in the top four in May.
