Torres transfer to trigger Anfield rush

As Chelsea prepare to increase their bid in an effort to take Fernando Torres to Stamford Bridge, Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has drawn up his wish list and is ready to make a late swoop for several players on the last day of the transfer window.

The Reds have just about wrapped up the transfer of Luis Suarez from Ajax, a move that was in the pipeline before Chelsea dropped their bombshell offer. Now Liverpool are set to make a flurry of late bids should the Torres deal get sanctioned by the Anfield owners.

Newcastle striker Andy Carroll is understood to be the preferred replacement for Torres while Dalglish has already shown interest in Blackpool’s Charlie Adam and Aston Villa winger Ashley Young and the trio could all be rushing to Anfield in an effort to beat the 11.00pm deadline.

Earlier in the window Carroll was being linked to a move to Tottenham, but Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has denied making an offer for the England international despite looking to strengthen the forward line with a top quality striker for the Champions League campaign. On a day when Robbie Keane’s loan move to West Ham was confirmed, news broke from Spain that Tottenham were busy trying to secure a striker from La Liga.

Guillem Balague, London correspondent for Spain’s top football magazine Don Balon, told Sky Sports News that Spurs have made a British record transfer bid for Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero and the £38.5 million offer has been rejected by the club’s President Enrique Cerezo. The bid triggers the release clause in Aguero’s contract but it is thought the additional taxes due on the amount will kill the deal.

Agents for the North London club have had busy time knocking on Spanish doors over the weekend and bids for Athletico Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente, Villareal’s Guiseppe Rossi and Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo have all been met with rejection.
