FA Cup Fourth Round: Southampton v Manchester United Team News

Sir Alex Ferguson has sent a makeshift defence to Southampton for the fourth round FA Cup tie at St Mary’s on Saturday. Edwin van der Sar whose retirement was announced earlier this week will remain at home while Ferguson takes a look at a prospective replacement for the 40-year-old.

Sir Alex is keeping his cards close to his chest regarding his goalkeeping options, so recent signing Anders Lindegaard will have to wait to see if he gets the nod ahead of Tomasz Kuszczak who looks favourite to inherit the gloves long-term from Van der Sar.

Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Rafael da Silva have all been ruled out of Saturday’s game leaving United’s replacement keeper to play behind an unfamiliar defensive unit. Nemanja Vidic is likely to be asked to maintain order at the heart of the defense with Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans in competition for a starting position. Michael Carrick will take no part as he nurses an ankle injury.

The Saints are one of three Championship sides facing Premier League opponents in the fourth round and were blessed to be drawn at home in the FA Cup for the seventh consecutive time and they will need all the help they can get against a United team beaten just once in all competitions this season. The Red Devils have won the last five encounters with Southampton and they last met in the FA Cup two years ago when United came away from St Marys with a comfortable 3-0 win.

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins will make a late decision on skipper Dean Hammond and fellow midfielder Adam Lallana, Hammond hasn’t played since limping out of the third round tie against Blackpool while Lallana’s knee problem has kept him out of the last two games.

Winger Dany N’Guessan is eligible after completing his loan move from Leicester earlier in the week, he is set to make his debut on Saturday as Jason Puncheon appears out of favour and Lee Holmes is a long-term absentee with knee injury.
