Australian Open Tennis: Murray through to Semi-Finals

British number one Andy Murray came through his toughest match of the tournament to beat Alexandr Dolgopolov and book his place in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Friday.

Murray had cruised to the quarter-finals without losing a set and ended the fairytale run of his 22-year-old opponent taking three hours and six minutes to win 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3. Dolgopolov was playing his first Grand Slam in Melbourne and had bombed out fourth seeded Robin Soderling in their quarter-final match, but despite blasting 10 aces in the first set was unable to outwit the canny Scot. Murray won the first set 7-5 after twice losing his serve then cantered through the second set without dropping a point on serve. When Murray broke serve in the opening game of the third set it looked like he would cruise to another straight sets win, but Dolgopolov fought back to break the Scot in the sixth game and after a set of cat-and-mouse won the tie-break to inflict Murray’s first lost set of the tournament. The effort took its toll on the younger player and Murray came out to blaze into a 4-0 lead in the fourth, after dropping his serve once more, Murray picked up the pace again and comfortably closed out to take the fourth set 6-3.

Murray will meet the winner of the last quarter-final match between Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer who play later on Wednesday while in the other half of the draw second seed Roger Federer and third seed Nikolay Djokovic have qualified to play each other in the semi-final.

Murray is on target to reach his third Grand Slam final and faces the prospect of a repeat of last year’s final when he lost out to Roger Federer. However there remains a couple of substantial obstacles in the shape of Nadal and Djokovic and bookmakers believe the Scot has it all to do to win his first Grand Slam title. Betfred left Murray’s odds to win the Australian Open unaltered after his expected quarter-final victory and he remains at 5/1 with the UK based bookmaker.
