Kaymer ousts Tiger Woods after Abu Dhabi win

Last year’s European number one Martin Kaymer returned to his favourite golf course where he blitzed a high class field with an eight-shot victory in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday. The 26-year-old German overtakes Tiger Woods to go second in the world rankings behind Lee Westwood and continued to build on last year’s form with his fourth win in his last eight tournaments.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy was looking to overcome a 5-shot deficit when teeing off in the final pairing on Sunday but was unable to make a dent in Kaymer’s third round lead. The German forged further into the lead with birdies at the second and third holes and four more birdies on the back nine completed his 6-under par 66 and a four round total of 24-under par. McIlroy finished with 69 to retain second place, two shots ahead of Graeme McDowell on 14-under par in tied third with Retief Goosen who shot up the leaderboard with a final round 64.

Speaking after his presentation Kaymer said: "It's just the perfect golf course for me, I consider it to be my home golf course to be honest. I always play well here, I enjoy coming to Abu Dhabi and it's always a great start (to the season). If you play like this it's a good start.
"It was more difficult this year but I just played really good golf - my putting was amazing this week. It was one of those weeks where everything goes your way.”

Kaymer won his first major title when taking the USPGA after top ten finishes in the 2010 US Open and 2010 Open, online bookmaker Sportingbet is offering odds of 5/1 for the cool German to follow up with another major title in 2011.

Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson took a break from the US Tour to compete in Abu Dhabi and Casey finished 18th on 8-under par with Mickleson down in 37th following his 5-under par.
