Premier League: Wolverhampton v Liverpool Team News

Wolverhampton entertain Liverpool in Saturday’s Premier League lunchtime match with both sides hungry for maximum points at the Molineux.

Kenny Dalglish has brought a much needed lift to a flagging Liverpool side but despite the visible enthusiasm that has been restored to the club, results have yet to improve and the Anfield legend is looking for his first win after three games at the helm.

Liverpool’s away record is dismal this term and despite their lowly position near the foot of the table, Wolves will present a tricky challenge for the Reds. Arguably deserving much more from some impressive performances against the leagues top sides, many observers feel Mick McCarthy’s side deserve to be much higher in the table.

Narrow defeats in Manchester where Wolves lost by a single goal on two occasions and the win against Chelsea proved they can be a dangerous outfit when at their best, indeed they came away from Anfield with a 1-0 victory at the end of December when Liverpool suffered a home defeat for only the second time this season. Wolves have shown some defensive improvement of late, having kept clean sheets in three of their last six games and with four wins from their last five games at Molineux, it is a bit surprising to see bookmakers price up Liverpool as favourites.

Much of Liverpool’s inspiration on the pitch comes from the driving performances of skipper Steven Gerrard and central defender Jamie Carragher who will both sit out Saturday’s game, Gerrard serves the last of his three match ban while Carragher’s injury will keep him out for the rest of this month. Serbian winger Milan Jovanovic could be struggling after missing training with illness and it will fall to Fernando Torres to create the spark if the Reds are to get something from the game. He has looked much keener since Dalglish’s arrival and scored his seventh goal of the season with his 3rd minute goal against Blackpool, a week on Wednesday. He is the obvious choice for Liverpool fans looking for the first goalscorer and Victor Chandler bet 17/4 for the Spaniard to open the scoring.

McCarthy could give a start to Liverpudlian, Adam Hammill; the 25-year-old winger was signed in the transfer window from Barnsley and came through the youth ranks at Liverpool without breaking into the first team. His arrival should keep Stephen Hunt on his toes; the tricky left-footer has been somewhat inconsistent since returning from injury in October. Wolves striker Kevin Doyle could be finding his goal touch at a good time, hitting the net for the second time in three days when scoring in the 5-0 FA Cup win against Doncaster on Tuesday, Paddy Power bet 11/4 for the Irishman to get his name on the scoresheet on Saturday.

Possible starting lineups:
WOLVERHAMPTON: Hennessey, Zubar, Berra, Stearman, Hunt, Jones, Jarvis, Milijas, Doyle, Ward, Fletcher.
LIVERPOOL: Reina, Kelly, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Lucas, Spearing, Rodriguez, Kuyt, Meireles, Torres.
