Australian Open Tennis Results: Federer in cruise control

Roger Federer began the defence of his Australian Open crown when he outclassed audacious Lukas Lacko in their first round match in the Rod Laver Arena on Monday.

Lacko tried in vain to go toe-to-toe with the world number two and Federer barely broke sweat as he cruised into the second round, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.

Federer was delighted with his form as he attempts to win his 17th grand slam title in Melbourne over the next two weeks: "I thought I played great," he said. "I thought it was a good match. I don't think he played too bad himself. I saw some talent in him and that's why I was really happy I chose the tactic early on to pressure him. That it worked was great and I'm obviously very happy."

Federer is looking for his fifth Australia Open title this year and bookmakers reacted by cutting his odds after Monday’s match. Sportingbet were left offering the best odds at 15/8 and they could change again after world number one Rafael Nadal plays his first round match against Marcos Daniel on Tuesday.

Back in the Hisense Arena, number eight seed Andy Roddick also enjoyed plain sailing in his first round match when defeating Jan Hajek 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 and he remains on course for yet another second week appearance at Melbourne. The 28-year-old American has been a regular in the final week of the Australian Open over the last ten years but has yet to make it all the way to the final.

12th seed Gael Monfils was facing the prospect of a shock straight sets defeat to Thiemo De Bakker, but the Frenchman fought back from 5-3 down in the third set against his Dutch opponent to win 6-7, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 and seal his second round place. American 16th seed, Mardy Fish was also forced to fight back from two sets down when winning 2-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 against Rumanian Victor Hanescu.

Elsewhere two seeded players failed on the opening day; Poland’s Lukasz Kubot upset 18th seed Sam Querrey to win a five set thriller, 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 8-6 while 23rd seed Nikolay Davydenko lost in four sets to Florian Mayer 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
