Sunderland Set To Revenge Derby Day Horror Show

Sunderland go into today's Wear-Tyne Derby as worthy favourites after recovering from their 5-1 defeat at St James Park in October with a run of form that has seen the Black Cats win six from twelve Premier League games since that defeat and lose only three . Steve Bruce's side have climbed to the lofty position of sixth on merit and a win today would help convince some of the doubters that they can still be there at the end of the season .

Sunderland have never been prolific goalscorers and relied too heavily on Darren Bent last season but the arrival of Danny Welbeck and Asamoah Gyan has significantly increased the goal threat and has given opposition defences cause for real concern on many occasions particularly at the Stadium of Light . Sunderland's success under Steve Bruce though has been based around solid defence and eleven clean sheets in the Premier League is an outstanding achievement . Despite conceding five goals at St James Park on an all round off day in October , Sunderland still have one of the best defensive record in the Premier League and Newcastle without the injured Andy Carroll may struggle to score today .

Both teams suffered shock defeats last weekend in the FA Cup as mentally this game was already taking centre stage . The animosity between these arch rivals is intense and Sunderland will be desperate to avenge the embarrasment they suffered at the hands of the Magpies when they capitulated in the reverse fixture . Steve Bruce will be hoping that key players Lee Cattermole and Danny Welbeck are fit to play and a home win looks the likely outcome at odds of around 11/10 .
