Australia looks to Lee for one-day answers

Australia have called on ageing fast bowler Brett Lee for the first game of the one-day internationals against England at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday 16 January.

34-year-old Lee has battled with injury in the last 12 months withdrawing from Test cricket in February and took no part in the humiliating defeat in the Ashes series. His last ODI appearance was in the six wicket win against India at Guwahati in October 2009.

The selectors are hoping he will be fit enough to play in the seven match series against England and establish his availability for the forthcoming ICC Cricket World Cup on the Indian subcontinent from February 19 – April 2.

Australia must name their World Cup squad by 19 January and selectors will use the first one-day international against England to assess a couple of players.

In his statement when announcing the squad, chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said: “The squad is selected for one game only in order for the national selection panel to look at certain players before we select the ICC Cricket World Cup squad of 15 on January 19.

“We have some explosive fast bowling with Shaun Tait, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Doug Bollinger and Peter Siddle all selected in this squad,” Hilditch claimed.

“Shaun and Brett will therefore have an opportunity to impress in this form of the game before World Cup squad selection.”

Australia are looking to the one-day series to restore pride after taking a hammering from England when losing the Ashes series 3-1. England’s strong one-day outfit remain favourites for the best of seven series and online bookmaker Paddy Power is offering odds of 11/10 for England to inflict further misery on the Aussie by adding the one-day series to the Ashes win.

AUSTRALIA ODI SQUAD:
Michael Clarke (captain), Cameron White, Doug Bollinger, Xavier Doherty, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, Shaun Tait, Shane Watson.
