Transfer News: Chelsea chase Brazilian defender David Luiz

With assurances that funding will be available for the January transfer window, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is looking to strengthen his squad in defence and attack.
It’s understood that Chelsea have enquired about Benfica’s Brazilian defender David Luiz but have baulked at the €40 million asking price.
Ancelotti is keen to secure the services of the versatile 23-year-old, who can play anywhere across the defence or as a holding midfielder, and hopes Benfica will re-evaluate their quote.
The Portuguese club is known to be in desperate need of finances and with Manchester City believed to be on the look out for a top class defender, the valuation is most likely made in hope than expectation.
Indeed, Benfica has been offering to sell its other prized asset, left-back Fabio Coentrao for around €20 million which is well below his release clause and its thought if Chelsea put a firm offer on the table, then Luiz could be signed for well below the initial asking price.
Any hopes Ancelotti had of convincing Chelsea to bid for Carlos Tevez were dashed when the Manchester City captain withdrew his transfer request after talks with the club on Monday.
Werder Bremen’s Hugo Almeida has refused to sign a new contract with the German club and he has been offered to Chelsea, but it is believed Ancelotti doesn’t see the 26-year-old Portuguese striker as the answer to his problems and will continue to look elsewhere.
Chelsea’s odds to win a second successive Premier League title have drifted on the back of a woeful run of form, which Ancelotti is desperate to remedy.
The side has slipped to fourth place without a league win in 5 games, which began with 3-0 humiliation by Sunderland at Stamford Bridge last month. From odds-on in the title betting at the beginning of November, Chelsea are now best priced at 2/1, available from William Hill.
