BETTING TERMINOLOGY (A-Z)

Aces
Predict which player will serve the most aces in a Tennis match.

All Weather Racing
Horse racing that takes place on an artificial surface. Lingfield, Kempton and Wolverhampton provide a polytrack surface whilst Southwell provides a fibresand surface.

Ante Post
Ante post bets are bets placed a day or more before the actual day of the event. Such bets can sometimes take advantage of better odds available. When placing an ante post bet, you are also wagering that the competitor will actually take part in the event.

Any-to-come Bet
A conditional bet that is placed only if a certain outcome of a separate bet occurs.
For example: You place a £100 bet on Team B, only if Team A wins. If Team A does not win, there is no bet on Team B.

Arbitrage
A bet that locks in a guaranteed profit, whatever the outcome.

Asian Handicap
Asian handicap offers a potentially less risky type of football bet compared to traditional "win-draw-win" style betting. If an opponent is considered superior to another, the weaker side is given an advantage, which is added to the result that is actually achieved. An Asian handicap includes two components: the handicap line, which refers to the term of the bet, and the moneyline, which is the payout offered on each team for the given handicap line - to a unit stake of one.

Banker
A bet that is considered to be a near certainty.

Canadian
A bet on five selections covering doubles, trebles, fourfolds and a fivefold.

Co-Favourite
A favourite who is joint favourite with at least two other participants.

Correct Score
You predict the exact result or score of the game at the end of normal time.

Dead-Heat
A Dead-heat occurs when two or more competitors finish a sporting event with an identical place or classification.

Double
A bet on two participants in different events where both are required to win.

Double Chance
A bet that allows you to wager on two of the three possible results in an event with just one bet. For example, Home Win or Draw, Home Win or Away Win, Away Win or Draw.

Double Faults
A bet on the number of double faults a certain player will accumulate until the end of the tennis match.

Draw/No Draw
A bet on whether or not the particular game will end in a draw.

Dutching
Backing two or more selections in an event to achieve the same profit whichever selection wins.

Each Way Bet
An each way bet consists of 2 separate bets - a win bet and a place bet. Your stake is split evenly between these two parts. For you to win the win bet part of your selection must win or finish first place. For you to win the place part of the bet, your selection must win or finish in one of the predetermined finishing places. An Each way bet is basically placing 2 equal sized bets.

Exacta
A bet placed on the Tote that requires the first two finishing horses to be named in the correct order.

Fastest Serve
A bet on the speed of the fastest serve during a tennis match.

Favourite
The selection in an event with the shortest price of winning.

Finishing Position
A bet on which team will finish in a higher position at the end of a particular competition.

First Break
A bet on who will be the first player to break their opponent's serve, to win a game during a tennis match.

First Frame
A bet on which player will win the first frame in a snooker or pool match.

First Goal
A bet on which player or team will score the first goal in the game, excluding overtime and penalty shoot outs.

First Half
All bets are settled at half-time, based on the score of the first half of the game.

First Period
All bets are settled at the end of the first period, based on the score of the first period in the hockey game.

First Player to Score
A bet on which player will be the first to score in a game.

First Quarter
All bets are settled at the end of the first quarter of the game, based on the first quarter score.

First Scoring
A bet on how the first points in a basketball game will be scored (two pointer, three pointer or free throw).

First Set
A bet on which player will win the first set of the match (in tennis) or which team will win the first set in the game (in volleyball).

Fourfold
A bet on four selections in different events where all are required to win.

Games Handicap
The total number of games will be added or reduced from the final score of the match's games in Tennis.
For example:
Federer is playing against Nadal and
Handicap line for Federer = -3 games
Handicap line for Nadal = +3 games
Final result is: 6:3, 6:4, 6:3
Total games won by Federer: 18
Total games won by Nadal: 10
If you bet on Federer -3 games, the handicap score is 15-10 and you win. If you bet on Nadal +3, the handicap score is 18-13 and you lose.

Group Winner
Predict which team will finish in first position in a group.

Half-Time
A bet on the results of a match at half-time.

Half-Time/Full-Time
A bet on the results of the game at the end of both half-time and full-time. Both selections must be correct for your bet to win.

Hand
Bet on which team will score the most points in a handball game.

Hand Asian Handicap
The number of points offered in the handicap is added or reduced from the final number of points which were scored during a handball game.
For example: Brazil plays against Italy Hand Handicap line for Brazil: +10 points Hand Handicap line for Italy: -10 points
If the final result is: 25:20, 18:25, 16:25, 22:25 Total points scored by Brazil: 81 and total points scored by Italy: 95 If you bet on Brazil +10 points you lose, if you bet on Italy -10 points you win.

Handicap
A race where horses carry different weights based on their official rating or greyhounds get a head start based on their ability.
A mythical advantage given to one team/player in a match to allow more even odds.

HB Goalscorer
A bet on how many points a certain player will score in a single handball game.
Overtime is not included.

Head 2 Head
A bet on which player will score more goals in a game compared to the player standing against him.

Hedging
Backing another outcome in an event you have already bet on to decrease the risk involved.

Heinz
A bet on six selections covering doubles, trebles, fourfolds, fivefolds and a sixfold.

Highest Half
A bet on which half in the game will have the highest total score.

Highest Quarter
A bet on which quarter in a basketball game will have the highest score.

IBAS
A service that settles betting disputes between bookmakers and punters.

In Play Bets
Bets in real time. This means that you can bet during the sporting event of your choice.

Kick Off
A bet in American Football, a predicting which team will kick off the game.

Largest Lead
A bet on which team will have the largest point lead during a basketball game.

Last player to score
A bet on which player will be the last to score in a football match. Bets are placed on 90 minutes play only. All bets on a player not taking part in the match will be considered lost.

Last to Score
A bet on which team will be the last to score during a game.

Lay
Betting on something not to happen, for example a team not to win.

Lucky 15
A bet on four selections covering singles, doubles, trebles and a fourfold.

Lucky 31
A bet on five selections covering singles, doubles, trebles, fourfolds and a fivefold.

Lucky 63
A bet on six selections covering singles, doubles, trebles, fourfolds, fivefolds and a sixfold.

Mixed Games
A mixed game refers to a virtual game between two teams. In this bet type you compare the difference in goals scored by two teams that aren't playing against each other, but against two other teams. All bets include the number of goals that are scored at the end of 90 minutes without extra time and penalty shootouts.

Most Goals
A bet on which time period will produce the most goals during a game.

Non-Runner
A selection that was originally declared or expected to compete but is no longer participating.

Odd/Even
A bet on whether the total number of goals at the end of a game will be an odd number or an even number.

Odds on
Betting odds of less than evens where the profit of the bet is less than the stake that is risked

Outright Bet
A bet on the outcome of a race, tournament or championship in various sports.

Over-round
The margin the bookmaker builds into their odds to ensure they make a profit on an event.

Over Time
A bet as to whether or not the game result will be decided during over time.

Over/Under
A bet on whether the total number of goals/points in a game will be over or under the stated number.

Patent
A bet on three selections that covers seven bets, three singles, three doubles and a treble.

Penalty
A bet on whether or not a football game will be decided by penalties.

Place Bet
A Place bet is the same as the place part of the each way bet, meaning your selection must win or finish in one of the predetermined finishing places in the competition or game.

Placepot
A bet on the Tote where a placed horse must be named in the first six races on the card.

Pari Mutuel
A tote style betting system used in France (the only betting system in France).

Permutation
A bet that contains a large number of selections covering a large number of different bet type outcomes.

Player to Score at Any Time
A bet on whether a particular player will score during the football match.

Round Robin
A bet on three selections containing ‘three pairs of singles stakes about’ bets, three doubles and one treble.

Rule 4
A reduction in odds on bets placed before a certain time due to a fancied runner being withdrawn. The more fancied the runner, the bigger the rule 4 deduction.

Scoop 6
A bet placed on the Tote each Saturday on six televised races, where punters compete for massive dividends.

Second Half
A bet on the goals of the second half of a football game, excluding extra time and penalty shoot outs.

Series Score
A bet on the exact score of two teams playing a series of games, given that every win awards the winning team with 1 point.

Sets Handicap
The total number of sets will be added or reduced from the final score of the sets in a tennis match.
For example:
Federer is playing against Djokovic
Set Handicap line for Federer: -1.5 sets
Set Handicap for Djokovic: +1.5 sets
Final result is 2-1
If you bet on Federer -1.5 sets you lose, if you bet on Djokovic +1.5 sets you win.

Single bet
A Single bet is the simplest form of betting: one wager for one event.

SP
Starting Price - the price of a horse when the race starts broadly based on an average of the on course bookmakers odds for the horse.

Spread Betting
A type of betting devised by city traders where punters must decide to buy (bet higher) or sell (bet lower) on the spread (fancied outcome by the traders).

Stewards Enquiry
An investigation into on goings in a given race. Can result in place reversal or jockey suspensions.

Teasers
A Teaser is a combination bet of two or more selections in one bet, in which the point spread or total is adjusted in the player's favour, by adding or subtracting points. The adjusted point spread or total improves the payout odds for the selections you make.
The number of changeable points depends on the number of the selections:
2 selections of 4 or 5 points
3 selections of 6.5 or 7 points
4 selections of 9 or 10 points.

Time of First Goal
A bet on the time at which the first goal in a match will be scored.

Total Assists
A bet on the number of assists made by a player or team during a game.

Total Frames
A bet on the total number of frames that will be played in a snooker or pool match.

Total Goals Minutes
A bet on the accumulated time of all the goals scored during a game, excluding overtime and penalty shoot outs.

Total Minutes
A bet on how many minutes a certain player will play in a game.

Total Rounds
A bet on the number of rounds that will take place in a boxing match.

Total Tie-Breaks
A bet on the number of tie-breaks in a tennis match, a tie-break is defined as a set that ends 7:6 or 6:7.

Total Winners
A bet on the number of winners (unreturned hits) made by a certain player during a tennis match.

Tote
Betting system that settles bets based on dividends rather than set prices.

To Win First Game
A bet on which player will win the first game of a tennis match.

To Win First Point
A bet on which player will win the first point of a Tennis match.

Treble
A bet on three horses where all are required to win.

Trifecta
A bet placed on the Tote that requires the first three finishing horses to be named in the correct order.

Trixie
A bet on three selection which covers the three doubles and the one treble.

Walkover
A race where there is only one runner left after a number of non runners.

Winning Margin
A bet on the goal or point difference between two teams at the end of a game.

Yankee
A bet on four selections that covers the six doubles, four trebles and one fourfold.
