Roger Federer held the number one ATP ranking for a record 237 consecutive weeks

The ATP Tour is an evolution of the tour competitions previously known as the Grand Prix tennis tournaments and World Championship Tennis. The ATP World Tour consists of Grand Slams, ATP World Tour Masters 1000, ATP World Tour 500 Series, ATP World Tour 250 Series, ATP Challenge Tour and ITF Futures Tennis Tournaments.

The four Grand Slams receive the most ATP ranking points for their winners, each winner receiving 2,000 ranking points. The Grand Slams consist of the Australian Open which takes place in January, the French Open (otherwise known as Roland Garros) which takes place from May-June, the Wimbledon Championship (otherwise known simply as Wimbledon) which takes place in late June-July and the U.S. Open which concludes the Grand Slams in late August-September.

The ATP World Tour series receive the number of ranking points that their name suggests, i.e. the ATP World Masters 1000 winner receives 1,000 ATP ranking points and the ATP World Tour 250 Series winner receives 250 ATP ranking points.

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is a tennis tournament played at the end of each year, involving the top eight players in the men's world tennis rankings. Unlike most of the other events on the ATP Tour, the ATP World Tour Finals is not a straight knock-out tournament. Eight players are divided into two groups of four, and play three round-robin matches each against the other three players in the group. From there, the two players with the best records in each group progress to the semi-finals, with the winners meeting in the final to determine the champion. Winners are awarded up to 1,500 ranking points.
