Michael Schumacher and the 2004 Ferrari in which he won a record seventh World Drivers Championship

Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1 and referred to officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of single seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).

Formula One has a huge worldwide following, attracting massive crowds and a global tv audience over 500 million, making the sport a multi-billion dollar marketing bonanza. The "formula" in the name refers to the strict set of rules governing the race conditions and specifications of competing cars. Formula One cars are the fastest circuit-racing cars in the world and constructors invest hundreds of millions to push the barriers of speed and stability laid down by the governing body.

The Formula One season consists of a series of races held around the world. Known as Grands Prix, the racing takes place on purpose-built circuits or in a few instances on city circuits where the public roads are closed to allow the race. The results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors.

The first F1 World Championship was held in 1950 when a selection of Formula One competitions were chosen for the World Championship. By 1984, non-World Championship Formula One races ceased and since then every Formula One race counts towards the World Championship. For commercial reasons, entrants nowadays are restricted to 12 teams and 24 drivers who make up the Formula One competitors. There are 25 points awarded for finishing atop the podium, with 18 and 15 points for 2nd and 3rd place finishes respectively, with points all the way down for 1 for 10th place.

Recent rule changes have led to a more exciting qualification process and competitive racing. As a result, Formula One is becoming an exciting betting prospect and more interesting to the casual viewer.
