The Newmarket Guineas meeting hosts the first two of the seasons five Classics run on the flat. The meeting is held each spring in late April or early May.
The two-day ‘Festival’ is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar and is the biggest event held at Newmarket Racecourse, famously recognised as the Home of Racing. The world’s best jockeys and trainers compete for classic glory on the hallowed turf of Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course where the historic 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas Classic races are run.
The 1000 Guineas is the second of the season’s five Classic races, and is run over eight furlongs on the second day of Newmarket’s two-day Guineas meeting. The race took its name from its first running in 1814 when the prize was 1000 guineas.
The race is only open to three-year-old fillies and for most of its long history the prize money remained below that of the 2000 Guineas where colts and fillies are eligible to compete against each other. The disparity in prize money was removed in 2001 and now both races provide winning connections with the same financial reward.
The 1000 Guineas is the first leg of the fillies’ Triple Crown, a traditional series of three Classics run over increasing distances and represents the ultimate test for thoroughbred fillies. The fillies’ Triple Crown consists of the 1000 Guineas run over one mile in the Spring, followed by the Oaks over one-and-a-half miles at Epsom in June and concludes with the St Leger over one-and-three-quarter miles at Doncaster in September.
PREVIOUS WINNERS OF THE 1000 GUINEAS
Charlotte won the first ever 1000 Guineas in 1814, she was owned by Christopher Wilson, trained by Tom Perren and ridden by Bill Clift, the same connections that had won the very first 2000 Guineas five years earlier.
For many years, the 1000 guineas was run two days after the 2000 Guineas and as aresult four fillies have won both races in the same year - Crucifix (1840), Formosa (1868), Pilgrimage (1878) and Sceptre (1902).
45 fillies have successfully completed the 1000 Guineas-Oaks double, most recently Salsabil in 1990 and Oh So Sharp was the last winner of the fillies’ Triple Crown in 1985.
Many of the records for the 1000 Guineas were established in the early years of the race when trainer Robert Robson saddled the winner nine times in ten years between 1818 and 1827, helping to set the owner’s record for the 4th Duke of Grafton who had setting owned eight of the winning fillies won with jockey Frank Buckle riding six of Robson’s charges. However, George Fordham surpassed Buckle’s record in 1883 when riding his seventh winner, 24 years after enjoying his 1000 Guineas success aboard Mayonaise in 1859.
Jim Bolger-trained Finsceal Beo won the 2007 renewal of the 1000 Guineas in a record time of 1:34.94 smashing the previous best by almost 1.5 seconds and beating the 2000 Guineas record of 1:35.08 set by Mister Baileys over the same distance in 1994.
Two years after Finsceal Beo’s remarkable achievement, Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Ghanaati set a new record time of 1:34.22 to put the fillies further ahead on the clock.
