Premier League winners image

In 2009 Manchester United won the Premier League for the eleventh time since it was formed in 1993.

The Premier League was founded in 1993, when it was originally known as the Premiership, following a decision by the top clubs in the 96 club Football League to breakaway from the old First Division and form their own 20-team ‘super league’.

The move came about at a time when football was re-emerging from the doldrums in England and following improved facilities with all-seater stadia, crowd attendances were on the increase and more importantly money was pouring into football from television broadcasters bidding for the rights to show First Division football. The big clubs recognised they could earn more revenue if they could take over negotiations for the television rights from the Football League and did so by establishing their own league.

The breakaway wasn’t total and the Premier League continued with a promotion/relegation system with the rest of the Football League and each year three new teams are promoted to the Premier League with the bottom three teams being relegated to the top division of the Football League.

While the influx of wealth into English football causes much debate among fans and purists, there can be no argument that the quality of football has increased each year and the Premier League contends only with Spain’s Primera Liga as the most exciting league in the world and English clubs have enjoyed the greatest success in European competition since the heady times of the late 1970s-early 1980s when they last dominated Europe.

Football fans have always enjoyed a bet on their favourite teams and players but now the game is accessible to more people due to wide television coverage, it has become a huge betting medium and is almost as popular as horse racing with gamblers. Driven by the massive worldwide interest in the Premier League and the demands of casual and more serious gamblers, bookmakers have been encouraged to create a huge array of football betting markets.

Ante-post betting on league and cup winners has always been popular, so to accumulators on outright match betting and match specific betting markets like correct score and first player to score. With the increase in the number of live televised football came the demand to place single bets on the winner, at one time bookmakers accepted a minimum of trebles for the three possibility win/draw/win market. This followed with betting on the number of corners, yellow cards and more, there are now over 50 different betting market available with the big online bookmakers on their pre-match betting and just as many on the live ‘in-play’ markets where football punters can bet while the matches are being played.
