A random draw is used to determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once or twice. Each team plays the teams in the same row and the same column twice, and all others once.

For example, Pune Warriors will play each member of Group A and Chennai Super Kings twice, and all other teams once. Teams are awarded 2 points for a win, 1 point for No result and 0 points for a Loss.

A four-game playoff stage following the Page Playoff System is held after the group stage. Four games are played in total in the following manner.

Game A, between the teams ranked first and second in the group stage.
Game B, between the teams ranked third and fourth in the group stage.
Game C, between the loser of Game A and the winner of Game B.
Final, between the winners of Game A and Game C.

Teams are ranked via points, wins, losses, No results and Net Run Rate.

The group stage matches for the 2011 IPL began on 8th of April 2011, and games will be played every day until the final group match on 22nd May 2011 on which matches 69 and 70 will be played.

Game A of the play-offs is played 24th May 2011
Game B of the play-offs is played 25th May 2011
Game C of the play-offs is played 27th May 2011
and the Final of the 2011 IPL is played on 28th May 2011 at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
